858. An Arts and Crafts Flambe Vase, Dated 1912

The cylindrical neck over a baluster shaped body raised on a narrow cylindrical base, the glaze running from mossy green and blue into azure blue transitioning, interior a pure white, the foot signed and dated.

Comprising; a bowl slip decorated with yellow and red lilies on a green ground, impressed "Moorcroft Made in England"; together with a baluster form vase slip decorated with stylized flowers in pink and purple on a green ground, affixed with paper label "W. 864. Two Glazed Stoneware Face Jugs, Signed R.H.L., American, 20th Century

Comprising; a salt-glazed "up-side down" head modeled with protruding ears, grotesque teeth, and saliva flowing down one side of his face applied with strap handle together with a jug modeled with a coiled serpent on top of a head, the face grimacing in fear, both incised "RHL."
Upside down 6-3/4" h., snake 9-1/2" h.

The particular yellow salt glaze used on vessels in this lot was first used circa 1950.
