877. A Large Persian Kerman Prayer Carpet, 20th Century

The inside of the mihrab woven as the tree of life, full of curling and billowing branches with leaves, flowers, and birds, the base of the mihrab woven with landscape and two peacocks, all inside three concentric borders, the primary border in an alternating pattern of cypresses and bushes, underneath which are two confronted birds (this usually represents opposing forces such as day and night, air and water, and good and evil), all in creme, mint, wedgewood blue, brown, red and pink. Wool pile on cotton warp.
