101. Israel Sylvestre (French, 1621-1691)

"Palais Des Thuilleries [sic] Du Cote De L'Entree". From Courses de testes et de bague faittes [sic] par la roi et par les princes et seigneuers de sa coeur en l'annee 1662.(Paris: Impr. Royale, 1670)
Copper plate engraving, unframed.

The image is of Louis XIV and subjects at the Tuilleries, which burned in 1871 and later became two wings of the Louvre. Silvestre's tremendous facility as an etcher led him to be chosen personally by King Louis XIV of France to realize a number of important suites of prints including the "Courses de testes et de bagues" to which the present lot belongs.

102. Johann Georg Bergmiller (German, 1688-1762)

Mythological Scene.
Engraved by Hieronymus Sperling (German, 1695-1777).
Engraving, matted.
10-1/2" x 8-1/8".
Note: Bergmiller was a painter of religious and allegorical subjects, a fresco painter and a designer who worked for the Elector of Bavaria. He spent a large part of his career in Augsburg where he served for years as director of the art academy. He also designed a number of suites of engravings. Sperling was a prolific 18th Century engraver based in Augsburg. He engraved portraits, religious and mythological subjects, and notably a series of plates on the churches of Vienna.

103. Jakob van der Schley (Dutch, 1715-1779)

Note: The 18th century Amsterdam draftsman and engraver, Jakob van der Schley is known primarily for his work as a portraitist and illustrator. He produced illustrations for the Life of Marianne, published between 1735 and 1747 at The Hague, and for works of Brantome.

105. David Roberts (British, 1796-1864)

David Roberts was recognized during his lifetime for his exceptional depictions of Egypt and Syria which were translated into high quality lithographs such as those in the present lot. Although he was born into a family of modest means, Roberts was able, through his talent for impeccable draftsmanship and entrepreneurial skill, to become a wealthy man.
